Sport tournament template
I created Excel templates for saving sports results. There are many variants of tournament: 3 – 16 teams in each group. The number of groups is not limited.
Each group is on a separate sheet. It contains a list of teams, the schedule and it automatically generates the table.
Settings – team names
For changing the team names just edit the table “Team name”. The changes will be reflected in the Schedule and in the Table.
Settings – points for a win, a loss and a draw
File contains sheet named Options. There you can set the points. The changes will apply to the entire file.
Settings – how to add more groups
In each file are 4 groups. If you want to add another group, copy one of the sheets and rename it (For example copy sheet named GroupD and rename it to GroupE). If you want to remove some of the group, just delete the group sheet.
Automatically generated table
You have to fill the score of each match and the table will be automatically sorted by number of points. There are no Excel macros, just an array formula and lookup function. The table calculates:
GP – Games Played
W – wins
D – draws
L – loss
GF – Goals For
GA – Goals Against
GD – Goal Difference
PTS – points
Bonus/penalty points
You can give a bonus or penalty points to the each team. For example: team2 has 9 bonus points and team4 has 10 penalty points. This will be automatically calculated to the final table.

Template for 9 – 16 teams can be used as the league schedule. Rounds are separated in different color.

I improved the formula so that it took into account the goal difference. Thanks Bert for inspiration. In the next few days, I will add other versions with a different number of teams.

The schedule has now 4 rounds. Each team can play with others twice as home and twice as visitor. So you can use this template for some kind of sport league (basketball, football, ice hockey, volleyball, …)

Hello, I am looking to create a cross-league tournament where one team has 6 teams (i.e. teams A, B, C, D, E, F) while the other league has 4 teams (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4). I would like to create two pools with teams A, B, C, 1, 2 in one pool and teams D, E, F, 3, 4 in the other pool. I would like A, B, and C to each play 1 and 2 while D, E, and F each play 3 and 4. However, I would like each team to get to play 3 games. So I require A, B, C, D, E, and F to all get one more game against another “lettered” team (within pool or cross pool does not matter). The format would be that each team has one game on a Friday night and their other two games on the Saturday (spaced out as evenly as possible). 12 of the 15 total games would be as follows: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D3, D4, E3, E4, F3, F4. The other three games might be something like AB, CD, and EF. I am struggling with a way to space these games out as evenly as possible in order to maximize rest time between games on the Saturday. Any help you might be able to provide would be very much appreciated.

Hi, this is a fantastic template and I’m using it for a tennis league, but was wondering about one issue and how to resolve it. When two (or more) players have the same number of points, how can the first option for ranking be the winner of their match.
I have been using these templates for a few years now.
On the scoring the points for a loss, I would like to have a >50% score point
Points would be
Points for a win = 4
Points for a draw = 2
Points for a loss = 1 (if the score of the lossing team is 50% or greater than 50% of the winning team
IE.
Score 10-5
Winner = 4
Loser = 1
Score 11-5
Winner = 4
Loser = 0
Score 3-2
Winner = 4
Loser = 1
Is it possible to make the options as below:
Win 3
score draw 2
no score draw 1
loss 0

Hi, I need a template for an 18 team round robin draw over 17 rounds. All teams play together at the same venue each round. All derby matches must be played at home venues. My difficulty is that one club has 4 teams in the competition but we only play at their home club in 3 rounds.

I love these templates. Have been using for years with our Little League divisions. However, I ran into an issue this year with our minor league division which has 13 teams. Once I get to line 92 of the spreadsheet (which is game #70) the standings stop calculating wins/losses/ties. The games played is still working. I’ve tried entering scores below line 92 and they all have the same problem. The standings have worked flawlessly up until that line. Any ideas? Or can I send my spreadsheet to someone to look at?

I use these for volleyball which we don’t have draws. if it is 1 set all the result goes to total number of points.
I can’t work out how to amend the formula. I have added points columns to the right of the score columns.

However i need to use it for a darts league ,where points = legs won. Games are best of 21 legs. Therefore if result is 17-4 winner gets 11 points loser gets 4 points. can adjust the code in the points cell to reflect this ? ie so that points come from GF cell for each team.?

Ive sorted it..shoe hidden formula ,then change points column formula.as follows
remove all $options formula.change u3 to the cell you want your points from(in my case x3 the GF column) so this leaves….X3+LOOKUP(………………..). table now changes to reflect scores of match .

it depends on sport. In football (soccer) is usually score 3:0 against the team and all points goes to the second team.
How do you change it so that teams only play each other twice instead of four times?
I would suggest to leave empty the second half of rounds.
Hi, I would like to make excel table for ordinary tennis league, but if 2 teams are equal with points than it should take into account their mutual match, so who won the match is higher ranking.
So, I have 11 teams, namely:
Team 1
Team2
Team3
Team4
Team5
Team6
Team7
Team8
Team9
Team10
Team11
After entering the results for each round, let Excel itself sort the Teams in the following order:
a) Team with most points is highest ranking.
b) If 2 teams with the same nr. of points, the head-to-head is then watched and whoever won is higher ranking. If the teams have not yet played each other or have result for draw, then skip to c).
c) If the teams are still the same, then they are judged by goal difference – higher difference is higher ranking.
d) If the teams are still the same, then see who received fewer goals – who received less goals is higher ranking..
e If the teams are still the same, then see who scored more goals – who scored more goals is higher ranking.
f) If the teams are still the same, then they occupy the same ranking place.

Yes, there is a way to change the ranking. There is a ranking formula in the hidden AE column that you can change to suit your needs.
How do I input as a default Win if a team does not show up, without inputting it as follows, 1-0, because if I do that it adds to the GF and GA totals, I do not want that to happen.

I’ve used this template for many years on my previous PC but I changed to a Mac last year and these are incompatible. I can download a table but lose some of the functionality which isn’t ideal. Is there a Numbers version of this I could access?

How can I find a template for 19 teams in a league
I would like to create round robins 7 rounds for 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32 players that rotate (not same partner) where 1 is strongest and the last player is the weakest. Would someone be interested in doing this for me? It means it is graded and not random who you play.

The one thing I need to note is: What would be the difference between using that long INDEX formula for the standings as opposed to a simple SORT formula?
Another note: In the hidden standings for each group, can’t GP just be a SUM command encompassing the W, L, and D columns?

I have a couple of questions relating to the “Bonuses”. I am running Blood Bowl leagues with Bonus points awarded as thus:
1 Bonus Point for every TD (Touchdown) up to 3
1 Bonus Point for every Casualty Caused up to 3
3 Bonus Points for a Shutout
This is on top of
W=30pts
D=10pts
L=0pts
I love it if you could create a spreadsheet that tallies these bonus points automatically once inputted as you did with the GF and GA.

In sports where the return game carries a bonus point based on the aggregate two game scores, can it be adjusted to 1. display total score from the two games and apply a bonus point to the higher points scoring team?

i.e
score ends 10-4 so instead of 3 points for win the team would get 10 and the loser get 4
i changed the draw to 7 which works.
as its a dart leage and we play for 14 points each league game so teams could win 8-6 but i need the points to total points won and lost and not a specific amount like 3 points for a win if that makes sense.

So 3 matches with every player . . if there is a result 2-1 then winner gets 3 points. If all 3 matches are drawn then both share 1 point each. At the end of the all the matches top 4 teams will proceed to next round and play knockouts for which the fixtures should be pretty easy.
Right now I can use the fixtures from Round 1-3 for my best of 3. But the challenge is to calculate the points at best of 3 level result and not at individual match level. I would want to keep the goal tally recorded though for every match.

Right now I can use the fixtures from Round 1-3 for my best of 3. But the challenge is to calculate the points at best of 3 level result and not at individual match level. I would want to keep the goal tally recorded though for every match.

We have 14 teams playing each other on 7 rinks
Each team can only play on each rink a maximum 2 times.
I have tried the existing templates but at some point some teams seem to be playing on 1 or 2 rinks three times.

Forgive me for intruding. I run dice netball leagues and firstly, I have always awarded 3 points for a draw which I have found more realistic. Secondly, simply use the bonus/penalty points column to input the 1 or 2 bonus points. Quite simple unless you are having a problem with the system.

We have a tournament with two groups. These groups play separately and they don’t play against each other. But we play 3 matches a day for a period of time. So i would need a table that combines the two groups so there can be games from both groups the same time, but no games mixing the two groups. What would be the easiest way to achieve a single sheet with this kind of situation….

I figured mine out – I had imported the sheet into Google Sheets which doesn’t show defined names…
I’m not sure if we’re both after the same thing but I found it easy enough to copy and paste the formulas around in the latest Excel and drag fields around once selected in the formula line.

I have been asked to organise the scoring for a week-long (lawn) bowls competition, taking over from a man who is very well-up on excel formulas etc., and has run it very efficiently for a few years. However due to unforeseen circumstances he’s not able to do it this year. I’m quite daunted by the challenge and trying to find a way to teach myself how to set it all up so that it runs efficiently. I will have to be able to provide team results at the end of every day and a team results sheet to enable the teams to see how they are placed every day. We are looking at over 90 teams of four players each.
Can you offer any suggestions?

The next sorting criterium is number in column GD (goal difference). It is calculated as the number of goals scored (GF) minus the number of goals conceded (GA).
Hi. this looks great, i have a similar ask this might seem like a tough ask but bear with me.
I have created a spreadsheet that houses correct football scores for 5 or so people, what i want to do is place in their predictions and when i put in the correct result at the end of play i want the sheet to recognise that the score matches and accumulate the points below each person, i.e 3 points for a correct score, 1 point for a correct result, no value if they get both wrong, also if they bank it to double the points i.e
Team1 v Team11 2 – 1 1 – 1 2 – 1 4 – 1 5 – 1 6 – 1
0 3 1 1 1
Once this is completed i want in a separate table to update the points scored as they are inputted week on week.
In effect i want the input of the correct result to trigger all of these calculations, i understand that it might be too much of a multi faceted argument. but its worth a try.

i changed the draw to 7 which works.
as its a dart leage and we play for 14 points each league game so teams could win 8-6 but i need the points to total points won and not a specific amount like 3 points for a win if that makes sense.

I am looking to get an update for a 5 and 6 team Round Robin netball tournament – i need to different scoring options for a loss:
1. to score 1 point if the losing teams score is at least half of that of the winners
2. To score 0 points if the losing team scores less than half the score of the winners.

I run an annual 1 day tournament so i only use 1 round and at the end of the 1st round I qualify teams to go through to the KO stages where I have a quarter, Semi and Finals.
To do the qualifications I need your table to include a Position column however this has to be based on the following criteria
1. Points scored
2. Goal Difference if points are the same
3. Goals for if the point And the Goal difference is the same
4. update position so I am able to ascertain the top 4 teams to go into the quarter finals.
currently I do this manually and i can often lose a lot of time because it is done onsite, manually, can you help me automate this process?

You fixture generator is very user friendly especialy for me as I am voluntary football officical in Phoenix South African for an amateur Football association that deals with children from age 7 to 17.
however because we deal with a community we encourage as much team in a division as possible. You only have up to 16 team . Can this be increased to more than 16 team .

First of all, I would like to thank you for such exceptional work on putting all these templates together.
I downloaded the 6 teams one and modified it a little for a baseball tournament (please send me an email in order to attach it).
This was modified for 6 teams, playing in 3 different fields at the same time, but sometimes we have more teams playing on 8 fields at different times, and not always have the same amount of weeks during each tournament.
I would like to know if you could walk me through on how to make any future templates without “round 1”, “round 2” etc. We also don’t use “points” in baseball, therefore don’t need the “Options” book. Also, we only use RF (Runs in Favor), RA (Runs Against) and RD (Runs Difference), but would like to know if there’s an easier way to modify it in regards to the number of teams there are in a certain tournament.

Good morning! I love the brackets! However, I ran into some problems. In both the 8 and 9 team table that tracks wins, losses, points for/against, etc, there is a format issue I can’t figure out. It doesn’t track the points, and wins/losses for the first few when I input the scores. Basically they are getting credit for games played, but are not showing the right amount of wins/losses to equal the games played. Goals for/against also didn’t calculate. Again, I love the brackets and the hard work, so I am not complaining, at all. Thank you!

points for a win = 4
points for a draw with goals = 2
points for each team in the event of a goalless draw = 1
points for a loss = 0

I have a team generator sheet set up. What i would like to do is to link each player to a team (your worksheet) for each lesson, so when points are assigned to that team, it assigns it to that player(overall leaderboard). I generate different teams each lesson. Want to make it a year long competition of the most consistent student.

We also use fair play points but I think I can add these into the bonus points box..

you can change points on the Options sheet. For extra points there is the Bonus/penalty points section (see in article). This is only way to do what you want. There will be no updates in the future, sorry.

If it’s a cup competition you need, there’s a way to create one.
If you’re familiar with using the “=” in Excel, you can create 32 fixtures, then 16, then 8 and so on by simply “equalling” the list where you type your team names in, multiple times. It can be done all the way to the cup final.
Once you’ve built your fixtures list (32s, 16s, 8s etc) you need to create a mini league of the 2 teams who are playing in each fixture. There are youtube videos that explain “RANK” and “VLOOKUP”. If each fixture has an equalled winner, the next round can be drawn automatically. All you need to do is type team names in and stick the scores in! You can have 2-legged games, replays and penalty shoot outs. Difficult to explain in this reply but gimme a shout if you need an Excel file with this system already created. Or I can make a special one for you.

i was able to find a walk around fix – i my panes frozen just below the table. after i unfroze them and added results from around 14 number of played games got updated.

The only thing i would change is the fact that team one plays 15 games “home” and in round 2 15 “away” switching between home and way every time is better.

Each team has one home gala against 3 other teams and will play against the other teams an even number of times or as close as. For a 7 team league each club would play the others twice in a season at various venues, once at home and three times at away clubs.
So for a 7 team league the grid would have 7 columns and 5 rows – the top row being the header for each home gala and the rows for the lane numbers – 1 to 4.
Is there a formula that would create a fixture list such as this that can be adapted according to the number of teams who enter each year?

I love the template, but would like to know if there is an easy way to adapt to my league’s 10 point system:
6 = win
3 = tie
0 = loss
1 point per goal UP TO 3 goals per game.
1 point for a shot out (opponent left at “0”)
So for example, Team A plays Team B, the score is 5:0
Team A gets 10 points (6 points for the win, 3 points for the goals, 1 point for the shot out). Team B gets 0 points.
Another example, Team C plays Team D, the score is 2:1
Team C gets 8 points (6 points for the win, 2 points for the goals). Team B gets 1 point (1 point for the goal).
Example 3, Team E plays Team F, the score is 5:5
Both teams get 6 points (3 points for the tie, 3 points for the goals).
Is there a way to adapt the point system to meet this criteria? If so, would you be able to create it? Thank you.

A neighbour of mine has just inherited management of a local darts league and the format is 16 teams in four divisions, each playing each other once, then the league splits into two with the top eight playing each other once for promotion and likewise the bottom eight for relegation. At seasons end each team will have played 22 games. The league season has to be this short so as to fit in no less than three cup tournaments. Is there such a template for a league that “does the splits” as I’ve described. We’ve managed to organise this in the past, albeit in a bit of a long winded way, but is there a simpler way of doing it. No great shakes if not. This is really a shot in the dark.

Yes, you can. There is sheet ‘Options’. There you can edit points for win, draw and loss.
But the sheet is pass protected and we can’t get in.

So you want to be able to set a match result as forfeit? Will both teams get 0 points then? Do you want to show number of forfeits in the League table as well? Does it add to matches played in the League table?

The team that forfeits gets 0 but the team that is forfeited against receives 1 point.
The number of forfeits each team has declared would be good to have in the table. Forfeits do not need to be counted in the games played.

i am busy organizing a cricket tournament, so that we can help kids find something to do instead of just wasting their time on the streets. I’m inviting 20 high schools, and it would be held over the space of a weekend. Now, the 20 high schools would be divided into 4 groups of 5. Each team plays each other once in the group with the top 2 qualifying for Gold Quarter Final Section. Teams 3 and 4 qualifies for the Silver Quarter Final Section, with team 5 being knocked out unfortunately. After the Quarter Finals there will be a Semi-Final for each section and likewise a final for each section. We will be having scouts at the tourney and hopefully they can spot a few sport stars of the future.
i came across your templates about a year ago, and find them to be the best (imho) i have found on the web. If anyone can create this, i know you can…I wish you the greatest of success in your life and may only the best of doors open for you in the future.

If you are from the US, Cricket would be similar to Baseball with totally different rules lol.
There generally aren’t Draws in Cricket. There are…but very rarely, win/lose/draw should be fine – 3-1-0 being the general standard, but we can add an extra dimension we can say…for every 10 runs scored, We can give a 1 point bonus. So if team A vs team B and team A wins the match, they would get say 3 point and because they scored 100 runs they would get an extra 10 point giving them 13 point in total, team B lost in a close encounter, scoring 98 runs, so they would get no points for the loss but still get 9 points because they score 98 runs.
Group A winner vs Group B runner-up, Group C winner vs Group D runner up etc, would be fine to select the Knock Out Rounds.

Have you ever done a 19 team schedule. We wanted to do a 4 game guarantee but after the 3rd game they are seeded in a place to play their 4th game and go to semis from there. However every way we do it someone plays an extra game….. any help would be awesome

Maybe I am tired, but isn’t it impossible for a team to meet the 3 other teams equally when you play 10 rounds and each team playing two matches per round?
That means 20 matches (10 rounds with 2 games) and the only solvable way is that a team plays two of the other opponents 7 times and the last opponent 6 times. So you either have to adjust the number of rounds (9 rounds and 12 rounds work) or make each round consist of 3 matches.

Hey J, the rounds don’t matter, as long as each team gets the same amount of games. So it doesn’t matter if one team only plays 6 times against another team. Does that make sense?

On that site you have a superb 18 team double round! We usually do 1 round and I could remove the extra rounds. But on those sheets cells are protected. Can you upload either both 17 and 18 team sheets unprotected or with single round?

I have randomized the matches. If you would like a defined setup like team1 vs team2, team3 vs team4 etc or just choose matches yourself, let me know.
League table is ranked by the following order:
1) points
2) goal difference
3) goals scored
4) internal points/goal difference in matches between teams in question
5) pre-season rank (which you can manually enter in column D)

Sorry, meant also to add, I am organizing a Foosball tournament. Each team will play each other once, each match is best of 5 sets. I want the points to be awarded based on no. of sets won, so for example if Team A beats team B 3-2, Team A gets 3 points, Team B gets 2 points. Tied teams in the table will be ranked on Set difference

Where you imputed the goals for each match i.e 3.2 and it caculates a win with 2 points i need to add data to LF LA and caculates LD as well.
so a fixture for me would be
team 1 v team 2 i would imput 4 values games for and against and legs for and against and table sorts by most points .

Hi – Yes pretty good. Prob i got is i need to manually move the fixtures around so they in current order. On the blank one on here i managed to edit the fixtures copy and pasting to correct weeks.
A lot of fixtures get moved from original weeks due to 2 teams at one venue etc and 1v2 3v4 etc i cant match up. Other than that its really good.
I did forget one thing – The total points (pts) is 2 for a win plus the GF so for example a 5-4 win would give team 7 points in total.. its a sum of GF PLUS GW (2 POINTS)
Is it possible i can manually move the fixtures and if so how do i dontate for your time.

The point system is easy to fix.
Can a match in some way end in a draw or should I remove it from the league table?
No there is no draws at all.
I tried going down to the fixture further down to imput the result but it came up as points scored but no games played . maybe cos i didnt do it in order. If i was generating the fixtures its no problem but fixtures are already done and all over the place. I dont have these to hand atm but they chop and change weekly.

Just to make sure, if someone in theory would win 100-99 then they would get 102 points, 100 in GF, 99 in GA and +1 in GD?

Regarding the fixtures issue. I mean by the end of the season all players will have played each other 4 times. So the list of fixtures in my sheet is correct, right? Just not in correct order?
I see two easy solutions and two a bit more tricky:
1) If you have the fixtures you could send them to me and I could plot them in (of course that doesnt help if a game is postponed)
2) I could add another “highlight player/team” option so it is easy for you to find a specific matchup and enter scores for that one and then you could enter the date/venue in the “notes” cell
3) I could just make the “matches” section blank and then you select from a dropdown menu which players faced each other and plot in the score. And I could add summary section where you could see the total of games each player has played.
4) I could expand the “matches” section and make you just cut/paste matches up and down in in

Hehe ok, so I made it harder than it was, cause you are saying that basically all GF = 1 point, no matter if you won or lost that match.
So basically just sum up wins + GF to find total points over a season.
If you won 3 matches and scored 25 GF during a season, you end the season with 3x2p + 25p = 31p, right?

HI, yes i dont mind either way if i have to insert the matches played each week (drop down) or copy paste thats fine with me. they chop and change all the time. If possible rather have it in a nice neat line all the way down.

Ok, it was a bit tricky actually to implement a min value to the overall scoring, but I think I found something that works now.
I’ll upload a new version within 2min, so check the page and see if it works correctly.
Luckily, since I had to double check now, I found an error in the scoring calculation, a minor one, but still, good to realise and now that error is corrected.

Sorry for length of time replying however ended up manually altering tables until end of season . My issue was that when a team defaults and does not play a game , I have to award the game (ie the 3 points , without awarding any goals. Problems are that if I have a match (Team A V Team B ) and Team B default , if I enter Home_Win in results columns it gives the points to TEAM B , should be Team A. I have discovered that if I enter Walk_Over in results columns then it awards Win,Loss &Points correctly , but does not show the game as PLAYED for either team. Please see example below after one game with Team B defaulting .
Premier Division GP W D L GF GA GD PTS
Team A 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 3
Team B 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0
I use 5 separate templates for 5 Divisions , number of teams is either 10 or 12 in each Division

We have 14 teams that play each other once a week which means they play for thirteen weeks….our problem is we have played our first matchs starting with team one vs team two (1v2) and (3v4) (5v6) (7v8) (9v10) (11v12) (13v14)…but now we can’t figure out the next twelve weeks making sure each team meet the others only once…….can you figure this out for us ?

Is it possible to have the first tie breaker be Head to Head? i did a mock run up and it had team 3 ahead of team 2 in the standings even though team 2 beat them. i assume you have it set for goals for as the first tie breaker.
Thank you for building this, it saved me a huge amount of time. I had to modify things a little bit to make the schedule run horizontally instead of vertically (as preferred by league members), but you did all the heavy lifting. MAC, Songtan Si Dart Association President.
Lawn Bowls matches have three rinks and there are 2 points on offer in each rink. The Team that scores the most (shots) gains a further 4 points. Maximum of 10 per match. Win two = 4 points but gain the most (shots) on the day = 8 points ‘Losing team gets 2 points for the rink they did win.
Problem: How can this be formatted to give points to each team in the points column.

I am trying to create a double header schedule with 14 teams,each team plays 2 games vs a different opponent and each team has the same number of early, middle and late games approximately.. The sport is basketball and we have 2 courts. The league only plays on 4 sundays and each team only gets 4 games, so they wont even play everyone once. It would be great to have the doubleheaders back to back or with only one game in between. Any suggestions. I really need help. Thanks

I Have an idea for tourneys. Say you Have 12 players Which you give a number. Lets Say there will be 4 players on each team. Lets Say in game one nr 1-4-6-10 is to play 2-3-8-9. In game 2 the rest (5-7-11-12) meets a random draw of the other numbers.
What i mean here is that there are no teams, but just players. Players that are on winning teams the most will win the tourney.
There are 2 tings to consider, a random draw of numbers, mening that there are new teammates for every game and that all players play the same amount of game. Is this possible to do in excel? Takk for any help

What I was looking for but for 8 teams, there should be 14 games each (7 home + 7 away).

The 8 team template can be used for 2 rounds of 7 games each for teams giving them 14 matches (7 home and 7 away). How does the template offer 16 games? The other rounds are optional.

is there a calculation to look at the row that see the gd is under 7points an awards the bonus points and also looks at a row that if i put in so i not how many goals are scored will award the bonus point on each round though

you can use the template: 6 teams in each group. There are 4 rounds but there is no need to fill all of them. You can use only the first 2 rounds.
Wow! Thank you so much for this, Jan. I am currently running a 33-team FIFA tournament at the boarding school I teach at, and I love the template, but am not sure how to alter it to make it 33 teams. Any tips or advice? We are trying to make it so each team plays 16 games, not every team once. Those 16 games will just be against random opponents. Are you intending to add a facility for semi finals and finals at all?
I am organising a small squash tournament where there will be 2 groups of 6 with the top 2 of each group going to a semi final for the “cup” and the bottom 2 of each group going to a semi final of a “plate” and it would be good to show this progress too on the sheet…I will probably be able to put together something, but wondered if you had considered this? We have a football league with 2 groups of 6 teams each. each group plays home and away. That’s the 1st round.
In 2nd round the 1 group play the teams in the other group once only. It work out that teams will play 3 home and 3 away in 2nd round

there is the hidden table in the S – AB columns. It contains auxiliary calculations for GP, W, D, L, … There is also the rank column that is important for final sorting. The visible table uses only lookup functions like INDEX and VLOOKUP to place data in the right order. I tried to do this as simple as possible so I decided to not use macros. However, there are some very complicated formulas that are made as an array formula.

I am after a league table set up for a snooker league.
Although it will show wins and loses the points will not be worked from them. The will be for Frames won and lost.
Example Team A V Team B
Team a win 5 frames to 3. Team A will get 5 points and Team B 3 points. Team A still get a win and Team be a loss.
Also can it be done where putting players names in gives them a point for winning there game?

I tried a 10 team template today with 4 pitches avaliable. That didn’t work out. Is it possible to make a template where you can adjust setup for x numbers of pitches? I could have made my tourney and split the teams into 2 groups. But, then, to make everyone meet each other I have to manually set up these games. Hi, it’s simple. Points from previous games write in the Bonus/penalty points section.
Is it possible to have a sheet depending on how many fields you are playing on? If you look at the sheet above with 4 teams, saying you only have one field then the second game should be the two teams not playing the first match, agree?

This template uses advanced formulas and it is designed for MS Excel only. It may not work correctly in other programs.

The bonus and penalty point facility is particularly important and welcome as it makes for unlimited points options
Improved ranking of tables has enhanced accuracy.
As templates go, it is ideally self-contained allowing for a league to be updated on one page as it were.
I am sure others will echo my opinions of this excellent site.

I’ve been racking my brains on this all day.
I’m in the same boat, having put a lot of hours into my own attempted version before eventually finding your wonderful resource.
But I’m unable to create the homescore, visitorscore options in a way that Excel recognises. I presume this is a shortcut to some kind of VLOOKUP formula (in formula builder?) but I’m getting a bit out of my depth with it now.
Any pointers to what makes the homescore and visitorscore tags work would be much appreciated.

This template is almost perfect for a cribbage league I am running.
In my league each cribbage match will play 3 legs so the score will be 1-2, 2-1, 0-3, or 3-0. Is there a way to give a bonus point to any player winning 3-0?
e.g.
0 points for loss,
3 points for 2-1 win,
4 points for a 3-0 win.

Hi, This is great for my son’s footy tournaments. I that saw you had a message on 12th May 2014 regards changing the formulae to take into account 2 points for score draw and 1 for 0-0 draw. I have seen other spreadsheets that enable amendments to be done to the points tally by adding or subtracting a point. The other sheets called them penalty points. Could that be incorporated, if you haven’t been able to amend as per the request yet? If you have amended, could you let me have please.

My specific problem is that in your W cells you have:

I tried to increase that array for 2nd leg and another 6 games. I widened array but I always get #VALUE! error and I don’t understand why.
I basically need this:
=SUM(($AG$3:$AG$14=V2)*(ISNUMBER($AH$3:$AH$14));($AK$3:$AK$14=V2)*(ISNUMBER($AJ$3:$AJ$14)))
But changing 8 to 14 keeps giving me error. Even visually the array seems fine. What am I doing wrong?
Ok, I managed to deal with that problem. I was stupid enough to press Enter when changing formula, instead of CTRL-SHIFT-Enter. Now that works. But…
When I enter result in 2nd Leg now, main table recognizes it as a Played match, but other cells don’t. Home and Visitor scores are not calculated, points too. Not sure where can I edit Home and Visitor functions to increase their array on the expanded table.
Ok, now I’m spamming. 🙂
I figured it all out and modified the table. Everything is working now except sorting on goal difference…
It will sort the teams on points but if two teams have same points, the table won’t compare goal difference so it can happen that -3 will be above +2.
I believe it’s all sorted in formula:
=X3*Options!$B$2+Y3*Options!$B$3+Z3*Options!$B$4
I just don’t know how to include another function that would first sort by points and if points are equal then it would sort by GD (column AC in my table).

An easy way to make a ranking on points and goal difference is the following:
multiply points by 10000
multiply gd by 100
make a ranking by this results

A good sporting template in that the league table appears on the same page as the results. However, Hassan Abazari is correct to state that the goal difference problem needs to be resolved as outlined in his post of October 13th.
Are you able to:
1-ensure teams/players with the same number of points are separated by goal difference and not alphabetically as appears to be the case?
2-are you able to provide templates for 14,16,18 and 20 teams?
3-are you able to provide a points deduction facility?
4-are you able to program the fixtures in order that for example 1 is at first home to 2 then away to 3 in it’s next game then home to 4 etc?
I have noticed that some teams are playing 3 consecutive away games especially in the 12 team template?
Certain amendments would only improve what is a superb template. If additions or amendments cannot be made then so be it.

But there is big mistake in that. As you may know positive goal difference is in a higher rank than negative one. In your template while a GD is 4 and the other is 50 then the latter should be in higher rank not lower in case the points are equal.
